The world innovations combining medicine, engineering and technology in autism diagnosis and therapy

We were honoured to host the conference which used a novel approach and format for discussing the diagnosis and therapy of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It was the first time when Polish and the International experts in the field of medicine and engineering met together in order to present their interdisciplinary research and applied solutions in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many of our keynote speakers were renowned scholars, who study autism, develop international standards, launch technology innovations, while working with ASD individuals and their families on a daily basis. Our aim was to initiate the dialogue between the world of medicine and new technologies, to present opportunities created by modern technology and promote its use in clinical practice.

This innovative conference format established a link between physicians, psychologists, educators who support children and adolescents on autism spectrum (ASD) with their counterparts who work with autistic adults, since one cannot outgrow ASD.

Two new, standardised diagnostic instruments were also presented: Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2), launched in Poland in 2016, with the emphasis on benefits and limitations of their clinical use. Diagnostic management of ASD is a complex process. Using modern, standardised diagnostic instruments enables comprehensive assessment by diagnostic panels of the professionals, ultimately leading to accurate final diagnosis made by a physician.

We hope that this event familiarised Polish specialists and all involved parties with American standards as well as British guidelines and recommendations of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) relative to diagnostic management of autism spectrum disorders.
